Q: How is Hellerwork different from Rolfing or Structural Integration bodywork?
A: The bodywork is very similar. The additional elements
of dialogue and movement re-education were added in because as Joseph Heller
worked with his Rolfing clients he noticed that certain sessions on particular
areas of the body seemed to raise certain "themes" (an example
would be while working on the feet and legs in session two, issues regarding
standing on one's own two feet, or standing up for one's self or
beliefs, or taking the next step seemed to be common). The inclusion of
movement re-education came about similarly-from observation that his clients,
if they did not change the way in which they used their bodies, did not
have long lasting results.
Q: Why do the series when it is just my (back, neck, knee . . .) that hurts?
A: While it can certainly be argued to just
"treat the place that hurts" the origin of the pain may be in
a quite different place. Additionally, when one is in pain, there is always
compensation throughout the body. Addressing the entire body, and the patterns
of compensation and tension throughout will generally provide not only the
most effective and long-lasting relief, but will also educate you in new
ways of using your body so that the pattern that caused the pain will not
reoccur.
Q: What can I expect during a Hellerwork session?
A: A Hellerwork session is usually 90 minutes long.
The usual attire for both men and women is underwear. The Practitioner needs
access to your skin to be effective in the bodywork AND you need to feel
safe and comfortable. A Hellerwork session begins with a visual assessment
of your body, and with a report from you about what you are noticing. The
bodywork, done on a traditional massage table lasts about an hour, during
which time there is dialogue on the "theme" of the session or
on any other issue that is up that day. The purpose of the dialogue is NOT
therapy, but rather to guide you in noticing and exploring the connection
between your body and your mind. Roughly the last half hour of the session
is focused on experiencing how you use whatever part of the body was the
focus of the session. Additionally, if you prefer, video may be used, so
that you can see for yourself how you move.
Q: Why is movement re-education an important component of Hellerwork?
A: Movement re-education is the aspect of Hellerwork that provides the means to have the results be very long lasting. The more you are aware of your habitual patterns of movement (or non-movement) the more likely that you can begin to change the use of your body to support its newly relaxed and aligned state. When you are falling back into old ways of using your body, you will have the tools to "hear" the protest and make a correction.
Q: What is the difference between massage and Hellerwork?
A: The main difference between massage and Hellerwork
is in the intention of the session. Massage often has the intention of relaxation
or feeling good (fine intentions, by the way) while Hellerwork has the intention
of bringing your body back to alignment and balance, while incidentally
relieving stress and tension AND giving you the tools to keep it that way.
A well done Hellerwork series will last you a lifetime, although you are
welcome to come back for tune-ups.
Q: While I am doing the Hellerwork series is it OK for me to continue to visit my chiropractor, receive acupuncture, do yoga, exercise, etc.?
A: HELLERWORK is excellent and supportive to have
along with other healing work. It can help your chiropractic adjustments
to be easier and last longer. As the tension is released from your body,
your energy can flow more freely, and the benefit of acupuncture can be
supplemented. The more flexibility and alignment in your body, the easier
it will be to do yoga, or exercise, and there will also be a reduced risk
of injury.
Q: Is there "homework" between the sessions?
A: With each session, there will be new
awareness of your body, and the patterns and habits of movement that have
been yours up until now. To receive the maximum benefit from your series,
you will want to change some of these old patterns and habits to new ones
that support your body to remain aligned and balanced and to continue moving
with ease and grace. Each session has specific things to be aware and practice
as you go about your daily life. Of course, you are not obligated to do
these, but they will markedly effect how long your results last.
Q: I am training in the sport of xxxxx. Will Hellerwork help my performance?
A: Anytime your body is in greater alignment
and balance and the constrictions and tension are released, your performance
will improve. Additionally, video feedback is available to allow you to
see exactly how you are using your body, and where simple corrections can
be made so that your body moves smoothly and efficiently, no matter what
the sport. You will also be guided in rebalancing your body if your sport
has you move repetitively in one way, or utilizes one side of your body
more than the other.
Q: I would like to lose weight. Can Hellerwork help me to do that?
A: HELLERWORK will not help you lose weight,
but it often makes you look as if you have lost weight! And it is a great
support in any program you may be using, because as your body moves more
easily, you may be inspired to begin exercising. And as your self-image
and self-esteem increase, it may be easier to make wise food choices. If
you are already releasing excess pounds, HELLERWORK is a great treat to
give yourself to begin to fully inhabit your new body and support your new
way of being.
Q: I don't have time to exercise. Will Hellerwork be useful anyway?
A: And you may be inspired to exercise when
your body has less tension and is more balanced and aligned, and you will
also reduce your risk of injury.
Q: I have been diagnosed with scoliosis. Will HELLERWORK help?
A: This is a condition where HELLERWORK has a proven
track record of making a big difference. While Hellerwork will most likely
not make your backbone completely straight, it can significantly reduce
the discomfort that you experience, and improve your appearance. As you
explore the connection between your mind and body, that may also allow your
body to move toward its natural alignment.
Q: How much does it cost?
A: Each one hour session is $100 and each
ninety minute session is $150. If you wish to pay for the 11 ninety minute
session series in advance, the total cost is $1500, a savings of $150 (11
sessions for the price of 10). Payment by cash, check or PayPal is acceptable.
